The striped catfish is distinguished by its four pairs of whiskers surrounding its mouth, leading to frequent confusion with the common catfish.

This species predominantly inhabits the shallow waters and rocky areas around Iliya Island. Its first dorsal fin and pectoral fin contain venomous spines, posing a significant threat to fishers and divers alike.
