It is undeniable that the Sherekhan were strong warriors. They could not, however, defeat the Dragons in their own flesh. In the end, they decided to borrow the powers of the Black Crystal, just as the Dragons did.

The power they gained by consuming the Pure Black Crystal was immeasurable. Their strikes split the earth, they no longer felt pain and they did not grow weary.
